Stabilizers

A stabilizer is any device or tool for maximizing the steadiness of the images you capture with your video camera. The most straightforward and commonly used stabilizer system is the tripod. A tripod allows you to secure the camera for well-framed shots where camera movement is undesirable for substantive or aesthetic reasons. A shot “on sticks” is very different from a “handheld” shot. The most common application of the tripod is the interview. Using a tripod for interviews is advisable because the tripod allows for the generation of very stable, highly watchable footage free from the distraction that sometimes goes along with handheld camera work. Another advantage to using a tripod for interviews is that it frees you, the filmmaker, up for doing the actual interviewing and conversing with the subject you’re filming. A tripod is also really handy when you want to shoot wide-framed establishing shots of the environment, situation, or a structure. With a tripod you can make a “pan” shot (moving the camera laterally to capture, left to right, a macro scene) and a “tilt” shot (moving the camera vertically to capture a large object or structure).

There are other kinds of stabilizers—hundreds of them in fact. But they all basically fall into three categories: shoulder mount, body mount, and handheld. You should do some research on your own to figure out which of these, if any, is right for the job at hand.
